Mt. Shasta in May

by Ouroboros » Mon May 05, 2014 12:55 am

I am interested in attempting a one-day ascent of Mt. Shasta via Avalanche Gulch or possibly Clear Creek as early as May 10. I am a reasonably strong day hiker. For example, I did Mt. Whitney via Mt. Whitney Trail last summer. On the other hand, I have no mountaineering experience, so I am looking for several reasonably experienced climbers, not necessarily from the Bay Area but preferably with knowledge of Mt. Shasta, to join me and show me the mountain. I am open to other options, including a two-day ascent if a one-day ascent is unrealistic at my level of experience. Who will join me?

As a beginner myself, I just finished a trip to shasta this past weekend and made the summit. I would highly encourage you to join a guided climb. I learned a lot about what it takes to climb mountains and although my backpacking experience helped me, it would not have been enough for me to just climb the mountain.

If you are an REI member sign up with them or look into Shasta Mountain Guides.I promise it will be worth your time and money.

Lastly, 14,000 ft is no joke. To do a one day ascent is not recommended for someone who has not experienced high altitude climbing
