My colleague and friend Konrad Mierendorff died on Saturday August 7th 2021 after a fall on the Wasenhorn, Switzerland. Konrad was a gifted Economist, both as a researcher and a teacher. He loved the mountains and was on his own journey into Alpine climbing. Never someone to rashly take risk, to act without considering and preparing, I knew him as always kind and considerate. We talked about hiking and climbing occasionally, but talk about work usually took priority.
From what I can reconstruct, he climbed the Wasenhorn on Saturday, August 7th. On the way down he crossed a snow field, perhaps in already deteriorating weather, and fell 200m. He was reported missing but bad weather allowed no helicopter search & rescue on Sunday. He was recovered on Monday August 9th.
University College London has lost an inspiring teacher, the Economics Department has lost a dedicated researcher, we have lost a gentle and thoughtful guy who loved what he did, and did what he loved doing. May he rest in peace. I will raise a glass to salut him when I am in the area in two weeks.
