McLoughlin or South Sister June 9

by philoparts » Thu May 24, 2012 6:57 pm

Taking a 5 day rope rescue class in Bend first full week of June, then planning on hitting either McLoughlin or South Sister. Thinking Sister is going to be the winner since the 3661 road to the McLoughlin trailhead is still buried according to the K-Falls RD. Last day of class is the 8th, planning on leaving from there to either Green Lakes or Devils Lake trailhead and camping out for the night, hit the trail first thing in the a.m. If anyone else is interested in meeting up, let me know.

Did you check if trails are still under snow?

It still looks pretty ugly up that way, Hwy46 is still blocked due to "mechanical issues and heavy wet snow". This is what the Deschutes trail report says.....

Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington, Three Sisters and Diamond
Wilderness trails- approx.95% are blocked by snow; up to 12’ of snow likely covers highest elevations. Jefferson Lake, Cabot Lake, Bear Valley, Round Lake, Millican, Scott Pass, Pole Creek, Lucky Lake,

We'll see if it warms up at all, but the plowing report also said that only the road will be plowed, campgrounds and turnouts will have to melt out on their own with about a 7' snow berm from plowing. Eh....we'll see what it looks like in a few weeks.

I did McLoughlin a week ago and found the 3650 road had been plowed to the trailhead. A high-clearance vehicle was handy for getting up that road, though. Trail was still mostly snowcovered.

Hmm, I only havbe a small car so I used the 3661 road last year. Maybe by the 9th, we'll see. Might consider Thielsen instead.
