Offical thread for the 2013 Summitpost Winter Gathering in Colorado
It's been a while since we've had a winter gathering. It's time to get the tradition restarted!
When?
Evening of January 18 through January 20. Also, January 21 is a holiday and many people have the day off, so the trip can be extended into Monday.
Where?
January 19: Fourmile Creek Trailhead. There is a choice of peaks to attempt, such as Mt Sherman, Sheridan, and Horseshoe Peak, so hopefully there will be a suitable peak for all.
January 20: Hoosier Ridge, Red Peak, Red Mountain or North Twin Cone.
Each of these peaks should be suitable for in-shape winter beginners with the proper gear. Stronger climbers can climb multiple peaks on the same trip. On these climbs, avalanche danger can be avoided with care, but if you stray from proper winter routes, you can get into trouble. Those who are unfamiliar with avalanche terrain should stick with someone experienced.
The next weekend will be used as a backup in case of bad weather.
Who is invited?
Everyone who wants to come and brings the proper gear. Major obstacles are the wind and cold rather than technical difficulty, but don't underestimate the weather. Chill factors can be extremely low and arctic-like in winter.
