From Achada do Teixeira
Visited Pico Ruivo on a day with very fine weather conditions (chilly but sunny). Despite being the easiest route, it still offers quite decent views along the way. Some parts of the trail were icy in the morning, due to being in the shade (the situation improved by the time of return). Enjoyed a lot the full panorama view from the summit - pretty sure to return to check out the other two approaches as well. FYI: there are shuttle services (or at least one) that take you to Pico Areeiro in the morning and pick up at Achada do Teixeira in the afternoon.

Trail run Traverse of Pico Ruivo
Trail run from Curral das Freiras to Pico Grande, Pico Ruivo and Pico Arieiro. Nice run, but pretty challenging. We hitchhiked back from Pico Arieiro to our car in Curral das Freiras.

Classic tour in clouds
Did the classic tour from Areeiro to Ruivo and made a little detour to Pico Cidrao on the way back. Scenery was amazing and I started out in sunshine, but sadly clouds rolled in and covered the top 200-300 meters, so there was nothing to see from Ruivo and on the way back only little to see from Cidrao and Areeiro.

Ruivo
After a long day of travel the day before, Kimberly and I got up early and took a taxi to Pico Ariero for our hike over to Pico Ruivo. Once we reached Pico Ariero, it was snowing with freezing rain and very cold and windy. We put on our coats and raingear and headed for Pico Ruivo. We were in the clouds for much of the way, but when the clouds broke at times, the views and scenery was amazing.
The mountains in the area are very steep and rugged, but there was a good trail to Pico Ruivo which included several cables, staircases, and tunnels. It was a spectacular hike. It never did rain hard, but we had light rain and high winds for much of the hike.
Once we reached the mountain hut below Pico Ruivo, we took a rest and ate some snacks before heading for the summit of Ruivo. The trees and everything else around the summit of Ruivo were coated in ice, with some snow as well, but we didn’t get any views from the summit. The route was still a spectacular one though.
After enjoying the summit, we decided to head down the trail to Teixeira. We were originally going to hike the trail all the way west to Encumeada, but there wouldn’t have been any views anyway, so we decided not to.
Once at Teixeira (the route down was easier, but less spectacular than the route from Pico Ariero), we caught a ride down to Santana. After checking out Santana, we took a bus back to Funchal. It was a great day.

I took the longer route with just one tunnel. The other one (Pico Areeiro West) was marked as dangerous, due to an earthquake recently, as I was told. It was a return trip of 6 hours with very mixed conditions. Starting in a surprisingly cold, freezing weather, then some nice and hot sunshine, following with a generally cloudy day, but still with OK visibility on top, and a hailstorm in the end. On Madeira you truly can experience all seasons in one day :)

Pico do Areeiro - Pico Ruivo
My first long hike. The weather was not good eneough but me and my boyfriend wanted to do it, so we just simply followed the path. At the end I was exhausted because of the steep ascent back to the start.

Beautiful hike along well kept trails. Don't forget a torchlight since you'll have to climb through two tunnels. The peak itself wasn't as nice as the trail towards and from it.
