2-part East Slopes
#1 8-21-15 on Memorial Day weekend made it to 13,700' on snowshoes before high winds and an electrical storm stopped us from climbing further. We'd followed the Barr Trail as far as the A-frame. So on our 2nd attempt we rode the Railway to Mtn View and hoofed it from there. Wow - so different sans snow.

Barr Trail in less-than-ideal weather
Was visiting Colorado from England and had been hell-bent on doing Pikes Peak since the previous October. Unfortunately the weather was less-than-stable this particular week with daily thunder. Set off around sunrise (6am IIRC) with sunny conditions as far as Barr Camp where I arrived 9am. Tough going beyond there, was feeling the altitude. Beyond the A frame cloud came down and there was light hail, so was deliberating whether to carry on but the trail was good and there were a few people about so I did. Made it to the top circa 1.30pm and had the obligatory doughnut. Weather started deteriorating around 2pm with light snow starting and occasional thunder so hot footed it off the summit, catching up with someone I'd met on the summit. Went down to Barr Camp in rain (thankfully no more thunder) together and spent the night there, returning to Manitou the following morning in thick fog. Would like to return sometime in good weather!

I can still picture the interminable Golden Staircase which finally led to the top. My friend and I camped at the little cabin which really made the peak easier. I can only imagine what doing this in one day must be like. Views out to the plains run for about 100 miles on a clear day. The Main Range is also very visible. I can remember being a little bit annoyed by the people who only "drove" to the top!

Barr Trail
Hiked in Sat. morning from Manitou Ave because the main parking lot was full, adding another mile at least. Hiked with a full pack to Barr Camp and camped across the way. Met some nice hikers and woke up the next day, hit the trail at 6:30 AM. Made the summit around 10:40AM, back to Barr Camp for the night by 2:30PM. Hiked back out to the car. 28 miles RT with 7,800' of elevation gain.

Up the Barr trail
Started at 410 AM, summit at 1030 AM. Fifty minute break on top eating food in the mob scene cafeteria and then a five hour descent to get back to my car in the power plant parking lot at 425 PM. The summit parking area had three cars with antifreeze spraying out of them but with the views, I can see why people make the climb/drive. It was well worth it, especially on such a nice day.

Crags Approach
A strong wind-chill (-20F) turned us around 1,000' below Pikes Peak summit. Light fresh snow true to forecast gave us good winter climbing in April! Our buffs froze solid, with stinging ice chips in the incessant >45mph winds, contributed to a turn around or face frost-bite. Broke trail the entire way.

I cheatedI started from Devil's Playground, but it was still 3 miles up with over 1100 feet of elevation gain, so I'm counting it.

crowded on the summitClimbed Barr trail once and the y-couloir once. Want to go back up via the hero traverse in the winter to avoid the crowds at the summit.
