Pikes Peak Marathon 2016  Sucess!

This was my 7th time climbing Pikes Peak via the Barr Trail. This includes a climb back in '08, a training run and the Ascent in '15, and three training summits prior to the Marathon this year.

My best time yet in 4:24 up. Not disappointed at all. Figured I'd finally sign the climbing log.

Cheated  Sucess!

Yeah, I drove up. Views were quite hazy, unfortunately. Made the side trip to the Devils Playground to tag the Teller COHP before heading to the airport (and tagging 3 more flatland COHPs on the way)

It's a Long, Winding Road  Sucess!

Expect a very long drive to the top if you go that route. Stop along the way for good pictures and rocks to climb.

First Fourteener  Sucess!

I flew out solo from PA to Colorado Springs to have some mountain fun. On my second day in Colorado, I decided to head out to the Pike's trailhead and walk up a ways to check the Barr Trail out. I got on the trail at 8 am, and heading upwards with the goal of just getting to Barr Camp.

I ran into a hitchhiker from Arkansas at Barr Camp who was clearly not prepared for the trip. He couldn't believe I was already at Barr Camp, despite starting at 8 am... He said he had been on the mountain for two days already!! He was planning on camping somewhere around treeline. I suggested that going any higher with his poor physical condition, lack of experience, and lack of gear (all cotton clothing in the rain, decrepid backpack, sneakers, etc.) was probably not a good idea. I was then on my way... I'm not sure what ended up happening with him.

After Barr Camp, I decided I would go to the treeline and reevaluate the situation. Upon arrival at the treeline, I felt really good and the weather, while not ideal, didn't seem too bad. Onward I went for the summit.

Despite not having plans to summit, I was on the summit, in a white out, somewhere around 1:30 pm. Surprise, Surprise!! I had the summit to myself, but couldn't see 10 feet in front of me... oh well!

In the Cog Railroad Shop, I realized I had lost my debit card somewhere between the trailhead and the summit, which meant I had to put all of my food back. They let me keep the fires though, because I touched them with my bare hands lol.

I decided to head down quickly, since it was another 13 mile trek back to the car. At bout 12,500 feet, I ran into a British Army guy on his way up the the summit. He was struggling, and I didn't want to leave him alone, so back up I went... It sucked much worse on the second ascent, as the altitude was now kicking my Pennsylvania ass!

Eventually, we made the top! Two summits and not a single view of the valley below lol. Anyway, the guy was cool enough to grab me a train ticket for the trip down, since I hiked back up with him to the top. All in all, a hell of a day!

And...done  Sucess!

Did the big run. Ran up Incline in 34 mins, then over to Barr and up to Pikes. 4:15 up, then down Barr all the way to car, about 7:30 total time. I had expected an uninteresting hike but Barr Trail is truly awesome. Long but simply great. BTW I could not sustain a jog above 12k so I had to speed-hoof it which was much better. Hey, cut me a break! I'm human! Not easy to do 20+ miles when the very first mile ascends 2k feet. Lactic acid city! Enough griping.
