Finally! An excellent page about the Porkies. I was hoping someone who'd spent time in that area would post a good, informative page featuring those peaks. Great job.
I hiked this itinerary September 9-12, 2012 and enjoyed it immensely. We got there on a Saturday night camped at Presque Isle (you can get backcountry permits there too). We hiked in to Lake Superior the first day (overlook Overlooked Falls) and ended up choosing one of the first few sites because there were definitely not as many bear poles as the park map makes it seem. Hiked to Lake of the Clouds the next day (keep hiking past the first four sites to the very last one, about .5 miles in - it is worth it - if you aren't going to make it by dark the sites on the ridgeline of Government peak trail and Escarpment trail are better than the aforementioned first few sites on Lake of the Clouds). Third day we camped on top of Government Peak (underwhelming view, refill water before heading up, crazy amount of regular/non-biting flies) and hiked out the last day via Mirror Lake.
We drove the other day and it came to a stop sign with a lock box to pay - did you have to go past that to go the Lake of the Clouds? I was under impression the parking lot was at end of drive but didn't know you had to pay to get up there. We turned around as we didn't want to spend too much time

lat = 46.4499
lon = -87.6301
However, the given elevation is 1873 ft, not 1958 ft. For some reason, the topo map is partly blacked out.
