Rattler on Toano Peak

Rattler on Toano Peak

Almost stepped on this "sleeping" beauty on the way down from the summit of Toano Peak. It was just cold enough that the snake was sluggish but I've learned to really scan the terrain in front and to the sides as I go up and down on these desert mountains. My companion didn't even see it until I specifically pointed it out to him. Click to higher resolution. June 7th, 2009

Eeek!

I know the feeling. I've been lucky on cool days as well.

Re: Eeek!

Its funny that I've hiked a lot of desert peaks prior to this and its only been in the last two weeks that I've had rattler encounters. The other encounter was on Craner Peak north of I-80 near Grantsville.

Nice Pic

I love to find Rattlers, before they find me. Call me crazy, but when its chilly and they are sluggish, I have been known to pick them up. Don't try this at home! by the way Dean, Congrats on the 2000 Power mark.

Re: What elevation did you see this one at?

The one in this pic was at about 7500 feet.
The one I saw in Utah the week before was at about 7000 feet.

Re: What elevation did you see this one at?

Just below Francis Peak 9540ft I found a Rattler crossing the road. Why did the Rattler cross the road? To get to the other SSSSSSSSSide..

Re: What elevation did you see this one at?

Wow, that is pretty high for a rattler which makes me re-think what i thought was the limit for rattlesnakes.

Re: What elevation did you see this one at?

What was your previous limit, I might ask? I saw one last week at around 8300 ft. in the Wellsvilles.

Re: What elevation did you see this one at?

I saw a rattler near the summit of Ben Lomond around 9,700 feet. It was during summer and probably not a good time to be hiking there anyway.

Re: What elevation did you see this one at?

I saw a cloud that was shaped like a rattlesnake.

The cloud was at 13,000 ft. Does that count?

When I was strolling along the south rim of
the Grand Canyon, several people were
pointing to a "rattlesnake," which was really
a Bull Snake.

And ... that ain't no bull !!!

Re: What elevation did you see this one at?

I've seen them on Willard Peak too. And that's what, 50 ft higher than Ben Lomond? And yes, I've picked them up before when the're cold and sluggish....with a very long stick!
