Stateline Route
I was looking for a lot shorter drive and more country to explore so I came in from the White Mountain Ridge trail 316 a couple miles west of Fish Cr. Rd. The trail was pretty good, though doesn't seem to get too much use. Took me past Pilot Knob, Granite Peak along the state line divide and I made a high camp above the saddle NE of Cache Saddle with excellent views! and snow for water. Next morning hiked over and climbed Rhodes. Nice! Never saw any people but did tree a cub accidentally. Perfect timing- as this route could be either too snowy or too dry with a short window in between. Very glad I went!

Hiked over to Rhodes from Blacklead. Tagged Williams on the way. I didn't find the lost Billy Rhodes mine, but I'm sure it is there somewhere.

A long hike up and down the trail to just below the summit, and a scramble to the top. Still patches of snow along the trail. If someone is going to the top, please take a pen or pencil for the register, there is not one there. I had to use a piece of lead from my survival kit.

Trail from Blacklead Mtn.
It was a long hike following an even longer drive. We shared our campsite just south of Blacklead Mtn. with both mule deer and mountain goats, neither of them cared much about us. A mule deer ate our hashbrowns and bread. We wished we had brought our fishing rods when we reached Goat Lake, as the fish were jumping like crazy. This is a very scenic area that is definitely worth checking out. After leaving, we drifted into Missoula on fumes, which was a little nerveracking.

Other than falling into a muddy spot past my ankle (it looked like dirt?!), it was an uneventful hike. The fish were literally jumping out of the water at Goat lake upon my arrival. Bizarre.
The views of the Bitteroots were nice. The history of Rhodes was fascinating as well (history found in solid register). The Lochsa River area is SO COOL.

Terrific but long hike with Dan and Dean. This one is weird, however, because it starts at the top of a mountain, drops to a valley, crosses a ridge, drops back down, then climbs to the summit. The final pull up to the car was brutal!

It is a 6.5 mile effort to gain the summit of Rhodes Peak from the TH located atop Blacklead Mtn. The biggest problem with this summit is that you first lose close to a 1000 feet before you start climbing up towards the peak. Overall, we gained about 3800 feet of elevation gain on this effort. Dan Robbins and Bob Bolton accompanied me on this one and for Dan it was Idaho county highpoint #42, leaving him just two to complete the whole state. One of the highlights of the effort was seeing a wolf on the way in.
