The Roan Highlands was one of the most memorable hikes I've ever been on. I think it had a great influence on cementing in my mind the direction I wanted to go in life. I also made a great friend around the camp fire at Doll Flats who I hiked many more miles on the AT with over the years.
Route Climbed: AT Date Climbed: January 25 & 26, 2006
Had a great time. At the parking lot, I noticed three spaces that were covered in vehicle glass. I prayed that no one would break into my vehicle overnight. After getting back in the morning, I was glad to see I had not fallen victim to greed.
It was very cold and windy. My watch gave a temp reading of 10 degrees that night!!!

I've hiked Roan a few times, in both directions on the AT. This is a nice mountain, holding the highest AT shelter on the entire trail (?). Keep going north, and the views get better for the next 15-20 miles.
Decided to climb this one while staying at the Roan Mountain State Park. We drove up to a trailhead and walked up. The weather was overcast and the top of the mountain was completely socked in and visibility was only a few feet. We would have been worried about getting lost if the trail had not been so well defined. As it was, since there were no views, and no people, we found us a spot in a meadow and just lay on our backs in the mist, enjoying the silence. Maybe the quietest place I've ever been due, I'm sure, to the thick fog.

Route Climbed: AT Date Climbed: Fall 99, 02 Winter 01This hike kicked my ass the first time I did it (from Iron Mt. Gap) in a tropical storm. Fortunately had just gotten my first GTX jacket!
The balds just past Roan are spectacular, I think they're Big and Little Hump Mts?
