Up up up
The steady steep switchback slog to the summit was killer starting around 4pm in hot sun with zero shade, but, on the plus side it meant that almost everyone else was descending as we were going up and we had a fairly empty summit apart from a handful of other hikers (and some sheep!). Amazing completely clear panoramic views for miles and beautiful light at sunset (although no good clouds for color). Long but straightforward hike back down in the dark.

As advertised
Lives up to all the pictures and billing and popularity. Bit of a slog up via switchbacks and possibly baking sun but worth the effort. Easy enough to run down in an hour or less assuming you can dodge everyone else.

Roy + Alpha
I kept a good pace and made it in 1:45 from the trailhead to the summit. Enjoyed the view for a while and the continued to Mt. Alpha. Continued along the skyline trail for another km and then headed NE down grassy slopes to the campground east of Wanaka. Great terrain!

My First New Zealand Hike
My first peak in New Zealand! Nice day with good views, and this is a wonderful hike. Lots of folks on the track up, and the parking was spilling out onto the road by the time I was near the top. It had been raining for the previous several days, and the road out to the Rob Roy Glacier track required fording several streams, which I didn't dare do in the rental car, so this was the fallback.
My wife Sonya and I climbed Roy's Peak again, this time during the Kiwi winter. It was surprisingly mild weather, and we stayed up top to watch the sunset. A beautiful view from the top!
I saw some gorgeous photos from this hike on your website! Why not add one here? Roys Peak could use some fresh photo material :-) You don't seem to be too active on SP anymore actually, how come?
Cheers,
Rick

In Cloud
Desperately seeking views of Mt Aspiring but saw only the inside of cloud! Still I hear the views are amazing. Very steep ascent/descent of 4000+ on sloped track. Very sore next day.

Main Track
Very nice trail. Great view of New Zealand. Wear lots of sunscreen.

Did this one as a training hike in preparation for an attempt on Mt Brewster later in the week. Boots were not properly broken in so I got laid up with huge blisters for days. Great views from the top and an interesting grave about one third of the way up. Speights Old Dark Ale highly recommended on re-entry.

Straight upNot much in the way of relief on the way up. Just a beeline to the top from the car. Great views however, and many friendly sheep.
