After an uncommon season of heavy rainfall, the hillside chapparel and wildflowers are in full bloom resulting in a pleasant short Trek to the summit. Views to the west were obscured with a heavy marine layer. Enjoyed time with the family.

Outstanding views
Very little trail traffic on this sunny weekday - all the better to enjoy the truly wonderful views. Diverse flora along the route was also a delight - the trail itself looks well-maintained.

Hellish Traffic
I left Laguna Beach around 10:30am hoping to avoid the worst of the gridlock and didn't get to the first trailhead until nearly 1:00pm. After Sandstone Peak I bagged 4 other dumpster peaklets including Triunfo Lookout, Ladyface, Saddle Peak East, and Calabasas.

From Stunt Road
After warming up on Calabasas, I drove further up the road and ran up to Saddle. Despite its unfortunate name, it has great views both south to the Pacific and north into civilization. Tagged both summits for good measure. Almost got a heat stroke running back down at high noon. Note: Do not do this section of the Backbone Trail in the summer.

I've hiked up here several times from several different trailheads. There are some great loop trips that culminate with a trip up to Saddle Peak for the great views.

Geology is a treat
The geology along the trail is interesting to look at and adds a lot to the scenery. The section of the backbone trail west towards Tapia Park was really quite nice and worth the trek.

beautiful hike via backbone trail
I guess I actually did not make it to the true peak, but we climbed up to the peak next to the radio towers and then followed the backbone trail all the way to Malibu Creek State Park.
