Saffron in the snow

Saffron in the snow

How can something so soft and fragile penetrate through rough snow? It is miracle of nature certainly. Saffron’s are one of first signs that winter is at the door, leaving. It might return again, but only for a short while. Saffron's grow in enormous quantities on Velebit and on all altitudes, from end of April till end of May, depending of the altitude and snow. Sometimes their carpet is so dense they are unfortunately unavoidable casualty of our shoes. Photo: Aleksandar Gospic

I second the praise.

Alecksandar,

Your written English is better then many (i.e. most) native speakers. Where were you educated? Beautiful prose.

Re: I second the praise.

Thanks Jon!! Well, it's a mix of many factors. Early in primary school (from first year now, in my time from 4th) we begin learning English. I also went to private classes to improve it even more. Also my dad is seaman so many times as a kid and teenager I went on ship and had opportunity to use it and practice with crew of various nationalities. Another factor is English speaking movies and TV channels. When watching I understand like it is Croatian. Final result is that I can think on English, which I often do :-) But my vocabulary is not as rich as would love to, but we are learning all life.

fantastic color

Plants of this genus are called 'crocus' in English.
Saffron is the spice consisting of these flowers' stigma. Actually, only one variety is used for spice - its flowers (which appeear in the fall) are sterile so it can only be grown by manually replanting the corms (bulbs) which divide each year, but it has extra-long stigmas.

Re: What kind of camera...

Olympus C8080. It has great macro, I can almost focus on objects that are touching the lens! But this wasn't that close.

Re: Amazing!

Thanks very much Bor!!! Nice to see you back in action! Huh, lately I don't have much time for SP because I'm always somewhere in action. I have tons of new material and I guess when summer passes and rainy days arrive I'll have time to post some pictures :-)
Cheers!
