Our first summit as part of our 4 day BSA, 9 peaks trek. Excellent view in slightly overcast weather, making it perfect summer hiking conditions in this dry local.

1962 Ascent
We were young BSA Explorer Scouts from Post 4, Pasadena. To get ready for hiking on the John Muir Trail, it was required to attend three "shakedown" hikes. In 1962 this peak was called West San Bernardino Peak and the elevation was then thought to be 10,624 feet. We had 15-minute USGS topographic maps, but there were no guidebooks with trail descriptions....we just hiked. It was a great weekend hike for young teenage boys to get ready for the Sierras.

Winter Climb
It was a perfect day winter day. The day before San Bernandion mountains have gain a foot of fresh powder. I strapped my skies to the backpack and started the hike via the normal route which in a winter conditions did not look that trivial due to constant route finding. I was 200 m from the peak, but it was already 5:00 pm so I decided to head back. Nice hike, very tranquil.

No snow?
The backcountry report says the trail is free of snow except for some patchy areas on the Forsee Creek Trail. Must have been a wild guess by forestry service because we spent a hell of a lot of time struggling trhough knee to hip deep snow for clos to a mile on our way up. Nevertheless, it was worthwhile.
