Thunderstorms!  Sucess!

Made the trip up with few surprises, though decided to hike through the valley this time. Once at the top it started sprinkling a bit of rain. By the time we were half way down, it was pouring with lightning and thunder everywhere! Got a bit cold, and very wet, but the weather made it absolutely enjoyable!

San Jacinto Peak  Sucess!

Used the tram. Then 11 miles and 2300 ft. of elevation. Trail was PACKED...over hundred people on the trail that day. 30 on top. Still bagged the second saint guarding the city. Interesting fact, at 2pm on the summit it was 62 to 65 degrees. On the desert floor, at the Palm Springs airport at 2pm, it was 108 degrees. A 45 degree difference in 3-5 miles.

bluebird powder day!  Sucess!

Early spring 2013. Snowshoe from the tram just after a big snowstorm. Absolutely perfect. Trees and rocks on top covered in rime-looking snow and ice.

Incredible  Sucess!

Kathy and I had started from the desert floor the day before but only made it to the Tram. Next day I returned to finish it with Leah. #2 on April 8, 2014: Mit Kathy.

Up Marion Mountain  Sucess!

Went up Marion Mountain and camped out at Little Round Valley. Made Summit first thing in the morning, beautiful views and amazing weather. On the way down we could see the fire spreading and the 243 was closed. We had to drive all the way around to get back to Orange County.

Quick hike from tram  Sucess!

Quick hike in beautiful November weather. Did this one by myself the afternoon before a conference in Palm Springs. I was nice and clear--Catalina island visible in the distance.

Favorite Nearby Mountain  Sucess!

Used the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which has a military discount for the tram ticket if you ask for it. There was till snow in various areas in view and a little along the trail. The Trails are clearly marked. The scenery is a welcome escape from the city. The summit had approximately 25 people resting on it. The difficulty of the hike is relatively low but long enough that it keeps the crowds away. Most of the hike is shaded but bring sunblock for sunny days and put it on when starting up the switchbacks because it's exposed after that point. Outstanding views from the summit. However, you can clearly see San Gorgonio in the distance which is about another 700 feet above you. I was up on the mountain again on 6Jul13 (temperature was around 80 on the mountain and 105 in the desert below) and the summer haze drastically reduced the views, in my opinion.

Snowshoe from Tram  Sucess!

On my birthday, decided to snowshoe my favorite peak in Southern California. Took Sid Davis route to Jean, tagged Jean then stayed on the ridge to San J. Reached the summit first in the group.

Beautiful Views

Went up the Palm Springs side via the tram. I would like to do this from Idyllwild, but waiting until I'm in better shape. The hike was fun and the views spectacular. If you are looking for just a day hike, a trip to the saddle is well worth it.

Beautiful winter hike  Sucess!

Hard to believe its so close to the city. Did it numerous times and ways when I lived in S Cal and never got tired of it.

Via Marion Mountain Trailhead  Sucess!

Relatively strenuous for a day-hike. More for the novice mountaineer or experienced hiker than for the average person. Great scenery, awesome views from the top.

Beware of your pace, if you take frequent breaks and go uphill slowly, while not starting early enough, you could be finding your way down in the dark. Careful planning can negate this.
