Went to the summit from the Tram under clear blue skies and warm temps. No snow or ice to be seen anywhere.

midnight Cactus to Clouds
A hike with Barry Holchin and comrades, starting from midnight at the Desert Museum trailhead in Palm Springs. We started with 13 people; only 7 summitted. Wonderful weather, though slightly chilly at the top. We summitted at 1:30 PM, and then hiked back to the tram, making it there by 4 PM. We rode the tram back down, instead of hiking. I, for one, was totally pooped and could barely stay awake walking back down. Watching the sunrise was probably my favorite part of the hike, as well as hearing Jennie Thomas yell, "Wooohoooo!" when we summitted, reminded me of a passage from Jack Kerouac's "Dharma Bums": "Suddenly I heard a beautiful broken yodel of a strange musical and mystical intensity in the wind, and looked up, and it was Japhy standing on top of Matterhorn peak letting out his triumphant mountain-conquering Buddha Mountain Smashing song of joy. It was beautiful... then suddenly everything was just like jazz..."

From the tram
Second time I went up there. There was some hard ice along the lower part of the trail. Pretty warm though; hiked in shorts and t-shirt all the way to the top. Came back down in the dark; had the choice between slipping on ice or wearing crampons. Took the last option but it was the most ankle-twisting experience ever! I did quite a bit of cursing. I swore only to do it again with a deeper snow pack! kngalaric was on this one.

Marion Mountain Trail
Perfect day for a hike with Ol' Walsher. Clear skies, perfect temps and great views from the top. Could have done without turning my ankle on the hike down, but at least I was only a mile from the car...

Miller, SJ, Folly, Jean dayhike
Dayhiked from Aerial Tram to Miller (a minor peak near SJ), then on to SJ. From SJ, down to Folly and then back up to Jean. Intended to go on to Marion, but fatigue dictated otherwise. Back to the tram for drinks and appetizers!

Cornell & SJ Dayhike
Dayhiked from Aerial Tramway to Cornell and then on to SJ. Both peaks dusted with a light cover of snow from a small storm a few days prior. Cornell N. side was dicey in its icy blanket.
Hiked with the intention of making the summit, but ran out of daylight near Wellman's trail junction due to heavy snow cover.

Longer than I expected but well worth it. Snow had just melted enough to not be a bother. Great views.

Palm Springs to Idyllwild
We went up the Cactus to Clouds, then down the Devils Slide.
3:20am started at the museum in Palm Springs.
9:10am got to the Long Valley Ranger Station. Took a 45 minute break.
12:24am summited San Jacinto at last. Took another almost hour break on the summit.
5:03pm reached the parking lot at Humber Park.
The hike up Cactus to Clouds is evil, but not impossible. We were up past the 4,000 foot elevation mark at sunrise, which is highly advisable as it levels out a bit at that elevation, making the heat tolerable until the final third which gets pretty sick from just below treeline until cresting the ridge.

Cross-country through late snow
Had to make our own way up through the late-season snow which hadn't melted much above 9,500 feet. Thoroughly rewarding!
First time on this peak. We camped the night before at Little Round Valley. Didn't know there was a cabin up there. What a spectacular view from the top of San Jacinto. I think it is a bit better view than from San G. Nice hike.

8000 Meter Challenge
My third and final peak of the day. I summited at 11:50pm and got back to camp at Round Valley at 2:00am. The veiws of Palm Springs and the high desert at night were impresive. I was very excited to have finished the 8000 Meter Challenge but I was also dead tired. A great end to a long day.
3 hours up from Marion Mtn Trailhead. First of four peaks that day.

Cactus to Clouds
Major hike, made it all the way from the Museum to the summit. The snow was deep at the top, needed snow shoes but didn't have them. Went cross country on the way back (luckly didn't get lost, like the couple on the same day).

Marion Mountain Trail
Perfect weather, sunny and upper 50s (F) on top. Nice view of the ocean. This trail is 6.0 miles (GPS), not the 5 1/4 or whatever miles shown on the signs. Either way, it's about 4450 feet of gain and a great workout.
