made it on the second attempt......but crashed out on the rocks at the top
Tried to summit this during the winter...and passed a ranger with a baklava on his face....wait that's a dessert. You know what I mean a special scarf covering his face. It was then I realized I was a little in over my head. Second times a charm!!!
Climbed San Jacinto Peak multiple times in all seasons by various routes (from Idyllwild, tram, Snow Creek etc.) in 2003-2007. Beautiful mountain, great views (sometimes you can even see the ocean)!
04/05/2015: Hiked to the summit via Cactus to Clouds route from the Art Museum. Total time Museum-Summit-Tram Station: 9h28m.
Nice hike, took the Round Valley route. Pretty hot temps near the base, but the top was very comfortable. Got buzzed by a ultralight plane at the peak, very cool!

Seven Pine Trail
I set up camp in Dark Valley on the Idyllwild side with my wife the day before. We drove around and took the tram up. After strolling the desert view trail with my wife I climbed the peak then hiked the nine miles back to camp while she drove back around. The 3.8 miles of the Seven Pine Trail was brutal on my feet and knees. Just too steep of a downhill for the end of a long day.
This was the mountain of my youth. Growing up in SD, I came up here and to Tahquitz many times. Good memories.

brutal...
Faith & I started at the museum at 6.26- in retrospect, given the time of year (one of the longer days), earlier would have been greatly preferable... Our attempts throughout the day to 'beat the heat' by gaining elevation more rapidly than the escalating temperature proved futile until around 6,000', where the temp's were finally tolerable. It was probably worst around 4k', where the desert brush does a great job of retaining the heat while not providing any notable shade. The average temperature during the day felt somewhere between 85 - 90 deg. Ugh... Fortunately we brought enough water, & eventually made it to the tram (we popped up on the 'rim' at 15.39).
By that point we were completely wasted, though (amazing how the combination of sun/heat can just completely take it out of you...), & the combination of that & fear we would be pushing it (esp. at our pace at that point) making it back to the last tram in time just led us to the tram down. Actually I think we were both of the opinion that a cold beer & tram ride down sounded substantially more appealing than continuing.
This must be done proper, though (i.e. to the summit)- I shall return!

Snow Creek & Marion Mountain trail
Second ascent in two weeks. 4/11 climbed Snow Creek with Miguel, Will, Bob, Cory, Charles, Tom, Edu, and Alexader. Great sunny day. Windy and freezing cold arriving to the summit.
4/5 skied up with Scott via the Marion Mountain trail. A lot of route finding, and too many trees cut that make slower the hike. Fun to ski though.
went with my buddies hans and jon. mellow. nobody else. perfect weather after fridays hurricane-force winds. took last tram down. didnt see anybody else up or down. am i still in SoCal?:)
