Fun Hike  Sucess!

Fun hike on a great trail. Did this with my wife. The short scramble at the very end definitely added to the enjoyment. Nothing harder than easy 3rd class.

Traver from Knights and McKinley  Sucess!

Pleasantly surprised by the lovely and sprightly summit finish on this one! Started at Knights, hopped over McKinley, finished on San Luis then descended to the Jeep. Loved this traverse!

san luis peak  Sucess!

I have climbed San Luis twice, both from the ridge that connects Vigil, and San Luis. There are also two small 4th class summits, on that ridge I will call middle Vigil, and west Vigil. This Makes for a great tour.

Nice...  Sucess!

Really enjoyed this hike and its many large rappels. I started from Knights Peak, then to McKinley and finally summited San Luis. Great day, great views and awesome cliffs. Some areas of thigh deep snow, but that is the fun part right? I suggest this route to those who DO NOT want to go through Bear Trap. I called them and they were super cool. went there and a large group of guys in a SUV pulled up and questiioned me, gave me directions to a building I couldnt find. I didnt want to start knocking on doors. So, we went up the trail. Found it kinda of an erie place. Maybe, it is just me...

Foggy start to June  Sucess!

Hiked via Bear Trap Ranch after nearly summiting Mt. Vigil. Nice views from top of Gold Camp Rd, Emerald Valley, and Mt. Rosa. Too bad my serenity on top was shattered by gun shots at the nearby range.

from Vigil Peak  Sucess!

early morning scramble  Sucess!

I, too, tried Mt. Vigil, but was unable to surmount the crux at the base of the summit block. When they say "exposed," they mean it! The final slab scramble to the top of San Luis was moderately challenging, and the views beautiful; topped out at about 6:40 am on a clear, sunny day.

Route Climbed: n.e. slopes Date Climbed: Nov 13, 2003  Sucess!

I climbed this in light snow with my friend Jeremy and his dog. We never found the trail from Bear Trap Ranch as we had no beta, so we ended up bushwacking straight up the steep n.e. slopes of San Luis with about 6" of snow. There are some excellent scrambling opportunities on the summit. We continued over to less spectacular McKinley Peak to the west which is in the trees. I came back the following fall to get Vigil Peak, which has some brief stretches of 5th class. Excellent page, Patrick!

Route Climbed: Bear Trap Ranch/San Luis Peak Trail Date Climbed: November 30, 2005  Sucess!

Great climb after a failed attempt on nearby Vigil Peak. I climbed in the snow, sun and wind on a beautiful weekday in Colorado.
