out with my wife looking at UNMMC for residency in 1992. XC skied a little then drove up to top. Great weather, great views. I forgot about this mounatin as its been so long ago.
Took tram then hiked 1.5 miles through muddy snow and gunk to top. Also drove up in 2003. One day I'd like to hike the La Luz Trail.

First Sandia Hike
A great first hike in the Sandias. The best feeling is driving in Albuquerque and looking at the Sandias, knowing that I hiked up all that vert. Descended via tram. This hike is a classic for New Mexico
Route Climbed: La Luz or Tramway Trail to La Luz Date Climbed: 2002-2005 5 times (or so)
If you include the Tramway Trail it adds a couple of miles to your hike. This is advantageous if you want to ride the tram back to your car. If you're hiking with someone, take two cars and save yourself a couple of miles.
Basic up/down jaunt. Impressed by some trail runners/ultra marathoners that passed me by. Wasn't into trad climbing at the time, or else would have been more focused on the rock!

This route is too much fun!
17 Apr 2005 - La Luz (Winter Route)
Still enough snow in the canyon to make a direct line the most feasible. Popped onto the crest just as bad weather hit...tornados by the airport even! A nice family gave me a ride down sparing me from an unpleasant descent.
23 Oct 2004 - Knife Edge of the Shield
Awesome scrambling route.
2 Aug 2003 - Agua Sarca to North Crest Trail
First time to top of Sandias - Agua Sarca is steep and difficult to follow in places - the Crest Trail is gorgeous and easy. Took Embudito Trail to S. Sandia Peak where it was incredibly windy!
Route Climbed: La Luz Date Climbed: 1991-2000 (many times)
I've hiked the La Luz in all sorts of different conditions and at many different times during the year. Aside from the switchbacks in the first two miles of the trail, I always love the hike and look forward to doing it again.

Route Climbed: Embudito/Crest Trail Date Climbed: August 4, 2003Fun but long trek with good views of ABQ. It's neat to see the changing desert terrain at the base to more wooded terrain near the top.

Route Climbed: Several rock routes and the road Date Climbed: Summer 1998I've done a few technical rock routes on the slopes of Sandia Peak. Good climbing. I've only been to the summit once, and that was via the road.
