Sassafras via Foothills Trail  Sucess!

We climbed Sassafras on a gorgeous early fall day on our way back to Knoxville from the Auburn vs. South Carolina football game in Columbia. I was not impressed with the summit itself but he trail to the top & the views of the surrounding area are well worth the visit!

Family Highpoints Trip  Sucess!

In 1987 our family did a highpoints driving trip and hit Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Kentucky's high points. Sassafras was number 24 of my 49 state high points, and number 23 for Vanessa. It was number 10 for Hillary and Holly.

Route Climbed: Summit Road  Sucess!

Should write a Trip Report for this escapade, but won't. Was supposed to be part of a NC, SC, GA trifecta from VA Beach. Unfortunately, got denied by road closures on Blue Ridge Parkway and the Brasstown Bald summit road. So I logged 1150 miles to bag Sassafras Mountain. Yeah...I'm a sick puppy. Nice road trip if you leave out the freezing rain part. Oh BTW, HP #8.

Beautiful Flowers  Sucess!

From Chimneytop Gap. The trail was lined with wild irises, violets (violet, yellow and white), and trilliums. Where the trail turns on to an old logging road, the pink ladies slippers were not quite in bloom yet. A beautiful walk!

Sassafras Mountain  Sucess!

Drove to Sassafras from Blairsville, GA on the very scenic Hwy. 64 in North Carolina. Very curvy road along a lovely trout stream with many waterfalls. Drove to parking lot of Sassafras below summit since we missed the Foothills Trail trailhead. Saw a pileated woodpecker. Hiked a short distance to register box. Found Foothills Trail on the way down and hiked on it for a mile or two. Lovely spring day. HP #8.

This was the third state highpoint for the day(TN,GA,SC). We got to the summit when it was getting dark. We couldn't see much of the views.

Route Climbed: 4.7 mile trail from Highway 178 at Eastatoe River  Sucess!

Climbed late one afternoon by myself. It was an overcast kind of day therefore there were only a few good views. It was worth the trip and I bagged only my second highpoint.

The view from the summit itself isn't the greatest, but there's a lot of good hiking nearby. Get some maps of the Foothills trail and plan a route up the mountain based on your available time.

Highpoint #22. Got here around 2 or 3 a.m. as the second stop in our attempt to do GA-SC-NC-TN-VA-KY in 24 hours. Walked around a little, since it seems there was higher ground behind the marker.

There was cones blocking the road, but some people around said it was okay to go through anyway. There's like nothing to see. Nothing! Plus SC drivers are slow pokes. Oh well, still it's another HP to add to the collection.

The hardest part about this highpoint is finding the road to get up to it. Once I got to the top I wasn't even sure that I was in the correct spot until I found the survey marker. I was expecting some sort of sign saying that I was at the highest point in SC... With trees obscuring the view - not much in the way to look at either...

Route Climbed: Road 199 Date Climbed: 1/5/2002  Sucess!

Due to ice, my friend and I had to hike up most of the road to South Carolina's highest point. We walked to the side a little bit and saw some decent view of North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains through the trees. The summit is well marked.
