Hey Britt, it's been a while. Nice page on another PA peak. I vaguely remember Second Mountain as a haze of foot pain and five miles of nocturnal hiking to the Rauch Gap shelter. We pulled in there about 9pm and collapsed after a 21 mile death-march on the AT.

Hey Charles! It has been a while! I hope all is well for you and that you're getting some quality hiking/climbing in this summer. That sure is a heck of a day to do 21 miles! Thanks so much for your vote and kind comments and hopefully I'll be talking to you soon. Take care!

long time ago

I went there a couple times with my more daring friends. None of us are technical climbers. We would park near the tracks then walk south just past the south buttress. We'd scramble up keeping the edge to our left. After achieving the top we would come back down with the north buttress to our left. Somewhere high up there was a precipice to climb out on that afforded the most spectacular view mostly south. Then we would go out onto a rock slide / rock field that is the remnants of an old quarry operation. Part way down we would find a place where a coal vein is exposed. This makes a "chute" of coal where we would squat down and "ski" down the chute. You could go like a bat out of hell.
I haven't been there since the 70's. I plan on doing it one more time with my 18 yr old boy while I still can. 2011
