What a gorgeous southern summit
This was our post AT backpacking shakedown hike and what a gorgeous hike it was! A bunch of old farts, we enjoyed racing up past the Virginia Tech youngins catching their breath assuring us “You’ve got this!” If you’re in the Roanoke / Lynchburg areas, this is a must-do hike. A lot of bang for the buck.
Hiked up the trail with my wife. I carried my two year old daughter on my back. It was a sticky day, but the wind at the summit helped cool me down. Hiked back down after scrambling around on the rocks.
I climbed Sharp Top during a steady snow. The views from the top were worth it, even on a cloudy day.

Absolute solitude..
on this usually very busy mountain. It's vast vista's eluded us due to a heavy blanket of fog but made interesting photos of the neighboring mountains piercing through.

Trail
Looped this with Flat Top and Harkening Hill to make a nice trail run.
Did it carrying my 3 month old daughter in a pack on my back. Rode the shuttle back down.

Perfect morning
Climbed Sharp Top attempting to see the sunrise but missed it by 20 minutes. The clouds formed a dark ceiling 500 ft above the summit which really made for some beautiful photos.

Sharp Top Trail
This was a fun easy hike. A guide book I looked at described this as a strenuous trek. It was easy, even with snow on the ground. Took 70 minutes to reach the summit at a leisurely pace. Nice views.

Fun to climb a mountain with my name on it!
Was driving the Blue Ridge Parkway and decided to stop and do this one just because it had my name on it. Nice little climb and a great view from the top.

I finally climbed Sharp Top on Friday, November 19, 2004. I'd been to the Peaks of Otter area several times without scaling the summit. Having arrived late, I made a dash for the summit at 4:00 pm and did the mile and a half and 1,400 vertical feet in about 45 minutes. It's a really classic eastern peak, and I want to go back and savor a longer trip to the top.
