Upon posting to the unidentified albumShooting Star (Dodecatheon), my guess is Bonneville (D. Conjugens) although it was a little high (~7100 Ft.). D. alpinum apparently always has four petaled flowers, this has five. Although the leaves are more like alpinum, longish and relatively thin. All I can offer.

Re: Upon posting to the unidentified albumYep, I think the only issue is the species. I was intrigues with the insect on the shooting star, which was why I took the picture. Thanks for looking.

Shooting starThis is Jeffrey's shooting star (or tall mountain shooting star), Dodecatheon jeffreyi). In the higher elevations it is very similar to D. alpinum and some taxonomists treat D. alpinum as a high elevation variety of D. jeffreyi. Generally D. jeffreyi is a much larger, robust species, but in higher elevations these species clearly merge and can be hard to separate in some locales.

Re: Shooting star
Thanks for the enlightenment.
The four versus five petals--is that an issue?
Some day I'm going to take a field botany course.
Thanks again.

Re: Shooting starGenerally D. alpinum has 4 petals, and D. jeffreyi has 5. Its a "usually", but not an "absolute" character. Also in the upper elevations, as D. jeffreyi gets smaller in characteristics, it is more apt to have some plants with 4 petals.
