What a treasure!
Exhilarating perch and just enough of a strenuous hike to get there from the 2WD lot. The views were truly exceptional. Shame about the graffiti, though.

Ocean to Peak Adventures: Mountain Summit Challenge 2023
Made it to the top with five others. Still a pretty decent amount of snow to cross, but it's quite consolidated.

Dayhike
We drove almost all the way to the peak in my buddy's Jeep. We thought we were in for a longer day but once we got here we just kept following 4x4 cars closer and closer to the peak. The road got fairly steep in places but the Jeep had no issue. RT hike was about 1.4 miles. This lookout is awesome, the stairs are really fun, and today was not that crowded for a Saturday. Good times.

Too many trucks
Hiked from trailhead. Saw four 4x4s on the upper section of the mountain, below the fire lookout. Then met a Forest Service firefighter who said one of the truckse had broken down the gate in order to get to the top. A crew was fixing it as I descended.

Packer Lake Start
Good workout on a hot day with partner Leeann. Many fresh faces from Packer Saddle at the top. Smoke from the state's wildfires obscuring the view. A welcomed dip in Packer Lake to finish up the day.
Ive done two ice climbs in the buttes. One was a few days ago by hiking up via the normal rout and before gettin to the summit desending towards young american lake. A few 100 feet form the trail down you have acsess to a nice snow and ice gully. It took us 5 hours with 10 pitches. We used a 30 m rope. This is what really slowed us down. Once out of the gully you can desende back down by rapelling or just heading towards the summit to find the trail again. It was a great climb.

Sierra Buttes
I heard this was a popular hike but with snow still on the mountain it wasn't crowded at all. Had a nice, clear view on this day.
Bit off on the wrong trail and headed up the pass to Sardine Lakes. Finally got turned around and made it up to the lookout, great views. Nice swim at Packer Lake afterwards.

Long drive, but it was a nice hike. The buttes definitely look more intimidating on the drive up!

From Sand Pond to the Summit
Started hiking at 3:00 am from Sardine Lakes Campground along the Tamarack Connection Trail, which traverses the hillside north of Sardine Lakes. At one point, I almost ran into a massive web across the trail with a wolf spider perched ominously at the center. My headlamp guiding the way, I continued onward and reached the lookout tower at 5:30 am. I waited for the sunrise on the lookout tower for about 20 minutes, but my body began to feel the cold and I decided to head back down. I arrived back at Sardine Lakes Campground at 8:00 am, having hiked 16 miles that morning. My family was still asleep in their tents.

South Side Snowshoe
Climbed the south side from the dirt road just north of Sierra City. I followed the switchbacks on the dirt road towards the west of the peak and then hit snow about 7,000 feet. Snowshoed up to right next to the summit. Very little visibility once above 8,000 ft due to cold, windy conditions. Best route given this early in the year due to Packer Lake being snowed in and Sardine Lake being much longer. Bushwacked down...however I recommend taking the 4wd road!
