From pine valley
It was pretty great up there, we did the loop starting at the Forsyth trailhead and then coming back down the browns trail, and then we looped back along the horse trail. we came out with 5,942ft and 15.82 miles.
In PV for 24th of July celebration.
Almost didn’t go due to how sick I’ve been…head cold/cough/swollen throat keeping me up at night. Glad I did! Hot on the way up. I was sitting on the summit and I got a flash flood alert and thought “nah”. Seconds later, a thunderclap burst overhead. Time to go! It started raining hard and soaked me to the bone…then several minutes later it was replaced by hail that got up to marble sized and was painfully pelting me. Luckily I was often among trees to deflect it, but the trail turned white and was that way for miles. I booked it down quick to get out of the weather and to avoid the lightning. It was sloshy and slippery and muddy. I knee’d a boulder and drew blood with less than 2 miles to go and took a full on spill with just under a mile to go and drew blood on the other knee. Had a lot of other close calls due to the lack of visibility from the sheets of rain & hail coming down and from the slippery ground and rivers of water running down the trail. Better than coming down in the heat? Maybe. Had a great time.
Made it from summit to the Forsyth TH in 50:24.
Time for a hot tub soak, cold medicine, and a long night of sleep ;)

Via Oak Grove
Started at the Oak Grove Campground. Tough hike, encounter snow at top of switchbacks once I started down going west toward Deer Flat. No trail to follow from top of Oak Grove Cliffs as Summit Trail was snowed over. From Deer Flat I accidently climbed point 10,217 as I mistook Deer Flat for Further Water. At the topo of 10,217 I saw Signal Peak and Burger Peak, so I dropped down to Further Water meadow and climbed Signal. It took me from 6:40 am to 9:30 am to get up the switch backs from Oak Grove. then 2 more hours to cover the snowed in areas up and over 10,217 and finally up to Signal Peak. The descend was 3.5 hours total.

from Oak Grove
First choice of the day was Hayford in Nevada, but the government closed down the entire wildlife refuge it is on so I headed here instead. Met someone coming down who told me there were no trail hazards and when I got on top of the ridge I encountered deep, thick snow. If I hadn't started so late to begin with I could have given it a shot but as it was I turned around and will leave this for another day.

Signal Peak via Brown's Point Trail
My 7th Utah county high point. I decided to take the Brown's Point Trail, following the "High in Utah" book's description because I had never been to Pine Valley. Although I was successful, it was a rather rough trip. The trail, until it merges with the Summit Trail, is obviously rarely used and was very difficult to follow. There were a few times my friend and I approached an area where we couldn't determine where the trail was, started down a path a few hundred feet, decided that was wrong, and went back. Further into the wilderness, there were occasional logs along the path that were clearly cut by a chainsaw, which gave us some comfort knowing we were going the right way. The descent was a harrowing experience dealing with monsoonal thunderstorms, with soaking rains and lightning crashing on the ridge tops less than a mile from us.

Via Browns Point
Only took me 3 years to climb it. Coming from Enterprise, I elected to take the Browns Point trail to the summit, in part because there is little information about this trail out there and I wanted to write something up for my website Southwestbeta.com. Pretty nice trail, mostly in the woods, but had some nice rock gardens along the way. Ended up being around 12 miles RT with well over 4,000 feet of EG. Went solo. It was really pleasant at altitude even though it was broiling in St. George.

Never ending...
...switchbacks! I think this was CoHP 18 or 19 for Utah. I'll have to count and come back and re-write it I"m wrong.
Started from Oak Grove. We started at 9:45 and it was soooo hot already. Don't be fooled by the pine trees in the campground. The first few hours of this hike is very exposed and if it's the middle of the summer and 110-115 degrees in St. George then get started as early as possible. So many cairns. Fun hike.

finally did it
started at Equestrian campground in Pine Valley (others closed for winter!) so took trail 40 from there to Browns Point trail head. Extra mile each way to BP trailhead and back - so 15 mile round trip. Summit view very limited by live and dead standing timber. Upper meadows (e.g, Deer Flat) frosty until the sun hit. Traces of snow from days previous.
From Forsythe TH. Oak Grove is closed for fire hazard. nice day, beautiful place, but blisters from the day before prevented me from maximum enjoyment.

I hiked up from the Browns Point trailhead. It seemed like the switchbacks would never end. Had a nice dinner on Signal Peak then camped near Further Water.

via Oak Grove TH
Two of us (DB and I) from our group of four reached the summit on a rather cool, early fall day (it was 27 degrees when we started). The other two in our group (CP and AA) had already been to Signal's summit on previous occasions and were off exploring other peaks. The gate to the campground was locked due to the federal government shutdown which added about a mile to our round-trip travel. I ascended Burger Peak also since it is so close to Signal.
9/25/2013 I started the hike about a 1/2 mile below the Oak Grove campground as the gate was locked. Surprising as it seemed like the ideal time of year to be camping in the St. George area. From there I made good time and reached the ridge in a little over an hour and a half. I had made it this far last fall with my dad before running out of time, so it was nice to finally be able to drop down into Deer Flats and Further Water. Very windy on top even with all the tree cover. The hike down from the ridge took me almost as long as the hike up. Very steep and rocky trail.

Rain, hail, and lightning
Although the day started off sunny as Rraine and I headed up Forsyth Canyon on the poorly maintained, highly eroded trail, but not two miles into the trip we noticed a cloud forming high on the ridge above. Around 10,000' or so, we were immersed in the cloud, which now extended out across the valley and was consolidating with other cloud formations in the area. The moment I opened the summit box, it began raining, so I decided to forgo my usual several minutes of reading the register before signing. Moments later it began hailing, although the only thunder we heard was many miles away yet. It rained intermittently on the way down, but about a mile or so from the car it began to rain in earnest and thunder was nearly constant. About a quarter mile from the car it began hailing again, and the intensity was something to take seriously. We got back to the car before the storm really kicked in. Any longer getting back and we would have been seriously hammered. We passed a small group who had packed back into the woods to camp the night, and hoped their tents were well water proofed!

4 Summits!
Wow. Three's a charm! Ran up from Oak Grove...much more difficult than expected. Took a wrong turn and went to the top of the wrong mountain too far to the west. Descended and made my way up and up and found rock piles and a summit register...for EAST signal peak. Brutal. Headed West and eventually found a register that said SIGNAL PEAK. Signed it and headed down over a mile before finding my cousin who wanted to go to the top despite me bringing only a water bottle and 2 gels...I had been out since the first false summit. Went back up and found a DIFFERENT Summit register which also said Signal Peak. This one had a geocache and I am beyond grateful for the person that left a Clif Mojo bar! You know it's a rough day on the mountain when your descent takes as long as your ascent but that was just about the case today...running out of water and calories took its toll! That said, 3 summits over 10k feet and one twice all made for 4 summits over 10,000 feet and 5.5 hours of running, power hiking, and stumbling...
