2nd Time's the Charm  Sucess!

I had tried this hike once previously (I missed a turn in the dark and spent a couple hours going the wrong direction).

No such misfortune this time. Beautiful day, didn't see anyone above the trailhead.

Steep heat   Sucess!

Climbed from the Oak Grove trail. The switchbacks were steep, but Deer Valley and Further Water were a welcome reprieve. Well worth the hike to see the meadows. View from the summit was minimal except from the west end, were the summit register was. Although the actual summit was about 300 feet away

Beautiful snowshoe

Approached from Pine Valley using the Forsyth trail. Blue skies, lots of snow, and really just an amazing day...other than the fact my partner got sick the night before and what was a planned 6 am start for the both of us turned into a 10:30 am start for just myself. No summit this day, made it to the junction with the summit trail around 9000 elevation before hitting my turn around time mandated by a waiting family in St. George. Will return to get this county highpoint in the Spring.

Oak Grove TH   Sucess!

Spent the night in the campground. Got up broke camp and started on our way. We were trying to find some geocaches and ran into a fellow cacher mockba and he told us we were going the wrong way. We hiked with him for a min and then he was off like a bullet. The hike was allot more then we expected 2' of snow and waterlogged meadows. Made it to the peak and back. This was my first county high point and it now has me addicted to hiking peaks.

A Fool's Sport

Before I learned about gaiters, and polypro, and mountain starts, there was the night I froze on Signal Peak and learned the hard way about the importance of the right gear.

Oak Grove TH  Sucess!

Brent and I, in the heat of an unusually warm late fall day, reached the summit after bagging, most comically, peak 10,217' too. Having GPS waypoints was a huge help. All of the page comments concerning the unending switchbacks are on the money. It's nice to have this county highpoint checked off. Herrlich!

Oak Grove  Sucess!

The Oak Grove Trail is in bad shape. Save this one for the spring or summer when it's not so hot!

Two different hikes  Sucess!

We originally attempted this peak in April and were turned back due to an exhorbitant amount of snow that didn't mesh well with our trail runners. We returned in July to experience totally different conditions. The temps were 100+ degrees and there wasn't a cloud in sight. We were extremely happy when we finally reached some tree cover on the upper slopes. A pretty cool little area!

Siginal Peak  Sucess!

Spent the night at the campground below and hit the hike at daybreak. It was a suprise when we hit the ridge and had like 2' of snow. But it sure kicked my but although the views were worth it

From Brown's Point Trailhead  Sucess!

The forest had a nice, pimeval feel. Enjoyed also the alpine meadows, all the flora and insects along the way and great sunset. The photos are here: Signal Peak hike

Wow  Sucess!

The climb from Oak Grove was Hellacious! (is that a word)
Lots of snow once we crossed the ridge, and the meadows were waterlogged.
(gotta love spring hiking)

Oak Grove trail  Sucess!

Butt kicker is right, especially on a hot August day. My son Brad and I slept at the campground the night before and started as early as we could to beat the 100 degree heat of the St. George area. The trail is badly overgrown but the tread of the trail is never in doubt. Great views all the way up and found that my favorite spot was Deer Flat, a neat little meadow that I was surprised to find in this desert oasis.

The hike down was probably harder than the hike up but it was a great day to spend with my son.

Very nice views on the way up.

Five from LVMC (www.lvmc.org) went to the top, signed both logs (one on the true top, and the one with a view). Without a GPS to find the "top" this would have been difficult, since there are many forested lumps that appear to be about the same height. There was a pile of snow at ~ 9700', and many, many flowers.

The Oak Grove campground is not officially "open", and there is no one to collect fees and maintain order. However, the interagecy information group in St George told us we could camp there, but there was no water. We camped at a very nice site... and at 9 PM, some local kids pulled in across the campground, set up boom boxes, drank heavily, and about 11PM, began shooting off guns. Our sleep was a little disturbed.

Nice trail to the crest. Still a lot of snow up high. Difficult to determine the precise highpoint, but I think I got it. A very pretty area.

I saw a couple of guys with dogs on the way up, but nobody else. Snow covered parts of the steep trail near the top of the Western portions of the trail. I kept thinking I would get snowed out at any second, but it never happened. In checking with my topo, I was sure I found the right bump that should be Signal Peak. However, I found no cairn, nor a register on top. Hmm...I might re-visit this one to check the other bump for any signs of visitors.

Hit the trail at 7:00 am with a sh*& load of black insects zapping my ass. Hit summit trail in under two hours and started a brisk hike west to the peak. After the meadow at Further Water I took a more direct approach to the summit. Made it back to the traihead before 11:30. Due to the steepness on the return trip running was not an option.
