Remote feel, beautiful mountains  Sucess!

Hiked in per the instructions in Barbara Bond's Oregon Scrambles book. There's a big descent before an even bigger ascent to tag this one. Skyline trail is very faint in areas. Gorgeous landscape and absolutely no one beyond the Strawberry Lake area. These trails need more boots on them, so go get it!

Miracle spring  Sucess!

Mike, Joshua, Rico and I dropped off the Graham Mtn rimrock and followed the ridge to the summit of Slide Mtn. Great views and beautiful day, but after the 5.3 mile hike from the Strawberry TH and ascending 2 summits we were out of water. Traversed below the rimrock enroute back to the Riner Basin-Slide Creek saddle there was an interesting spring flowing for about 8 inches where the moisture on the rimrock was focused to a little overhang. We filtered a gallon and a half ... then continued to the saddle and a climb of Peak 8,511 before hiking back to the TH.

Slide Creek Route  Sucess!

I really had no idea how much bushwhacking I was going to have to do to reach the summit of Slide, but found that the skyline trail actually got me within a 1300 feet of the summit, just a short climb up the face to the top. The trail is absolutely beautiful, lush and green along the bottoms of the basins with either high elevation forests or sage brush above. Absolutely the most gorgeous hike in the Strawberries, no question.
