From the East
Got up early and did the out-n-back ascent of Berg, Cornell, and Slide on the red trail. Very fun indeed.

some fun in the catskills
I took the LONG route to Slide over Wittenberg and Cornell, and I would say you do the same! Then made a loop and returned to Woodland Valley through a short cut and the Phoenicia-East Branch Trail

winter camping
A group of us snowshoed up the trail from the west. Spent the night on the summit. It was one of my coldest nights out ever. The air temp. that night was about -20F and the wind was blowing.

Porcupine on Slide
While looping part of Slide Mountain Wilderness Area via Phoenicia-East Branch and Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide trails, starting from West Branch Road Trail head, saw my first porcupine in the wild going down Slide towards Cornell. Had a Terrier and Malamute along who were very interested in it also.
Great as a loop hike (approx 16 miles) from woodland valley over whittenberg, cornell, and yes slide, the push to the summit is steep and fun and dumps you onto the summit!

Route Climbed: Phoenicia->Curtis-Ormsbee->Cornell Wittenberg Date Climbed: December 30th, 2005
Trail in very good shape...packed down, but some ice during the late afternoon. Curtis-Ormsbee trail less packed down than others. Summit has about 7 in. of snow where not packed down, but most of it is packed. Cornell-Wittenberg from the east looked in poor condition with deep snow from the summit.
Route Climbed: Wittenburg-Cornell-Slide Loop Date Climbed: 8/27/05
A small group of us did the WCS Loop over the weekend. I agree with another poster that Wittenburg has the best views! Stayed at Giant Ledge for the night and bailed on hiking Panther due to t-storms. Great loop and my first time in the Catskills.
Route Climbed: Slide-Cornell-Wittenberg trail & loop Date Climbed: Oct 27, 2002
The most spectacular part of this hike is Mt. Wittenberg. Be prepared for several Class 3 scrambes on the ridge between Slide and Cornell and Wittenberg.
One of my first catskill experiences, also earned 3500 club membership with this as my last required winter peak. Camped on the summit in 8 feet of snow.
Route Climbed: Wittenberg/ Cornell/ Slide Date Climbed: 2 Nov 2002
I climbed this with a buddy Emil Stojakovic, A late start and snow higher up slowed us down. Did the last couple of miles back to the woodlawn Campground in the dark. Lost the trail, campers taking trail blazes as souveniers, followed a drainage, ended up in someones backyard, then hiked on the road back to our car. Fun scrambling gives an alpine flavor to a Catskill hike.
