Snyder Hill's lofty summit?

Snyder Hill's lofty summit?

The top of a mountain? Yes indeed but it is one in North Eastern Washington. The marker was the key to finding the highest spot on this peak known as Snyder Hill. If I look wet in this shot, it is because I am. We felt like we had been through the jungle to get this one, a prominence peak, one of Washington's 144. 6-9-07 Note: I went back again to do this one with Bob Bolton in Sep 07. It was a perfectly dry day and we were up and down in an hours time.

Paper in my hand?

A map. You need a map & compass to do this one since there is no trail. A GPS also helps but it is easy to get turned around on this one as you descend so pay attention (hint: compass)

The Rain Gear ...

says it ALL. It's EASY to get lost among all those trees. I remember when I had a forestry job in Enumclaw - came across a HIKER who was hiking ALONE and had become utterly LOST in the Clearwater Wilderness. We had to carry them DOWN the mountain in a litter. WOW !!!
(PLEASE come PREPARED for the conditions. It ALWAYS looks easier from the PARKING LOT!)

Re: The Rain Gear ...

You are soooo right about how easy it is to get lost on a forested summit. I use a GPS and a map and sometimes will use surveyors flagging to mark my way up, retrieving them on the way down. Works nicely if you don't have map and compass savvy. Larry, no reindeer noted in this NE Washington forest. : (

Dennis has a HEALTHY slug posted on his page!

Re: You mean,

No reindeer and no slugs. Normally this area is pretty dry in the summer but the rain made the forest (no trail) slick and trecherous as we climbed up and over the blowdowns. If there were slugs, Rudolf probably ate them. ; )
