Thank you Liba. Yes, it was very good to be able to finally get out for a long weekend, even if most of the time I stuck to driving. I really like some of the backcountry 4x4 roads though, can be as enjoyable as hiking.
The name comes from the color of the rocks. They are mostly light colored, but dark or black on top. Apparently like someone covered in black who is mourning.
Not a bad road at all. Just a couple iffy spots. A little bumpy but with a good vehicle much of it can be done fairly quickly, and Gold Valley is nice and isolated too.

I wondered about that road...Just happened to see this page. An alternative to the long slog from Greenwater is good.
