Approach
ROAD ACCESS: Take road N-323 from Granada to Motril. After 39 km, at the Venta de las Angustias, turn left for Orgiva. At Orgiva you have to follow the road signs to Trevelez and after Pampaneira turn left again (north) for Bubión and Capileira. Stop at Capileira, which is the village at the beginning of the hike.
CLOSEST TRAIN STATION: Granada.
CLOSEST AIRPORTS: Granada, Málaga, Almería.
Route Description
The climb is not difficult, you only have to follow a dirt road going up from Capileira towards the Laguna de la Caldera and the Refugio (hut) de la Carrigüela del Veleta. The summit is placed quite close to the Refugio. To hike up the valley might also be possible but I do not know about any existing path. It would have to be a cross country effort.
Essential Gear
Depends on the mountain conditions in the higher sections of the path. If necessary, take good waterproof boots and snow gear. In winter, crampons and piolet might be useful though not always necessary.
Huts
There are three huts servicing this area. Rather close to the dirt road (west of it) you can find the
Refugio de Poqueira. It's placed 2500 meters above sea level on the southern slopes of
Mulhacén. At the upper end of the dirt road you will find the (much smaller) unguarded hut of
la Carigüela del Veleta. There's another hut, similar to this one, placed by the
Laguna de la Caldera.
