My dad and uncle were headed down to Fields where they grew up for a daytrip, so I tagged along and managed to talk them into swinging up on the ridgeline so I could finally get a load of the view from the top of the Steens. It was really smoky out from all the range fires going on (big hollow road into Fields was a blackended wasteland). Despite the smoke, the viewpoints were really cool, I am definitely coming back here on my own terms to do some hiking and climbing. My dad did the half mile walk up to the summit with me, always like to have him join me for these sorts of adventures.

Route Climbed: half mile hike from road
Very interesting place with awesome view of the Alvord Desert. The glacial valleys are sweet.

Overnight at Wild Horse Lake
Antleope and Wild Horses were beautiful. The the alpine/riparian habitat is very interesting ...amazing desolation to the east with some sulphry hotsprings and dried lake beds.

Route Climbed: Roads
Ran it as a Steens Mtn camper... amazing view of the Alvord, and the gorges are spectacular. Definitely a lung burner, but worth every wheeze!
Route Climbed: Mtn loop road Date Climbed: August 2003
Drove most of the way then hiked to the summit. Went on a four day backpacking adventure through one of the cool steens mtn gorges. Alvord desert is a good place to drive your car at unreasonable speeds.

rfbolton and I drove down from Washington and stayed at Page Springs campground near Frenchglen on Friday night. We were interested in doing Steen's as it represents the highpoint of Harney County. We did the loop and wouldn't recommend the southern route. Frenchglen has a neat little hotel that serves a good breakfast. We saw lots of bow hunters out and about.

Beautiful hike to the summit!!!
My wife and I did this as on overnighter from South Steens Campground. It's a substantial approach distance (~12 TH to summit) via the SPECTACULAR Big Indian Gorge. Descended via the road (due to time constraint) nice views up at the top, but some nasty dust from tourists passing by in their rattling cars.
