I also found the name a bit strange and asked some locals about it. They didn't know anyhting about the origin of the name, but a climber from the La Rioja province thought it could have to do with the Polish climbers who were all over Argentina early on. The Poles for example made first ascents of Pissis, Ojos del Salado and in the Mercedario area. I don't know if the name could be Polish, but as you say, it rings a bit Eastern European.
