east side
hiked up the east side of Sugarloaf Peak on this holiday weekend. Started from the "Sugarloaf Picnic Area" identified on some older maps, approximately 3 miles due east of the summit, near Highway 89. Hiked through the lava flows to the upper cone, where the going was steep but efficient. First ascent in 1.5 years, according to the summit register.
