A nice little challenge for an otherwise straight-forward hike.

Fun scramble
A fun final scramble to the top after the hike in. Went with John S. We went off trail east of the Castle Peak ridge, got off route, descended under the summit and went downhill at the base of the north cliffs. We found a steep dirt and talus chute heading up west of the summits, regained the trail from there, then wound back to the highest point. Maximizing our mountain time for sure!

4th class route.I couldn't find summit register/though it used to be there. good day.
Downclimbing the summit blocks, I pulled a hand hold off and nearly stumbled over the E face. Caution. Have skied the summit a few times, always seem to get breakable crust here. :P

good fun
First snowshoed in march 2007, came back in late December 2008 to go up one of the chutes with ice axe and 'pons, first time doing anything one could even remotely consider mountaineering. @AlpineAffinity taught me the basics here.

SW Ridge
2 days before, tried to gain ridge without crampons or ax. Came back with gear and brother. Fun hike. Tried new gear. Followed E ridge of Andesite Peak to SW ridge of Castle Peak. Descended down the S main chute and glissaded down to the trees. The sun was shining and I was wear shorts and T-shirt.

December 2004Did the third class route in plastic boots, just for fun. Storm coming in, windy. Astonished to see rappel chains at the top ..

fun anytime of yearI have climbed the "true" summit of Castle many times, it is always fun to get a little bit of climbing in at the very end of a nice hike.
