Well Worth the Climb!
Route Climbed: Horseback trail to Plateau, East Slope to (North) Center Peak.
Conditions: 1-2 inches snow previous day, temp 38-42 degrees, no wind!
What a tough challenge...what a rewarding experience. The only thing I probably did wrong was not contact the Rangers. I don't recommend climbing solo. This IS a remote mountain.
I approached from the high plateau --> rim of gully --> up to ridge leading up to (North) Center Peak.
The hike on the plateau is a good 1 1/2 miles. The approach to the ridge is class 1-2. The approach up the SE slope to the (North) Center Peak is a good class 2+.
Thoughts: Winter is probably the best time to climb Sunset. There is very dense brush. Also, there are "Jillions" of boulders and nooks for Rattlesnakes in warmer weather. Next time, I will let the Rangers know my route.

With Alan Ellis, Lower Marmot
Did a six mile circuit that included all three summits, as well as the sub-summit rock outcropping at the south end of the chain. Windy day, but otherwise great. Sure was a lot of bushwhacking, though. A whole lot.
My son Ben and I climbed this peak on a cold morning. I remember the temperature in Lawton was 43. But as we reached the summit of the north peak we encountered solid ice on the boulders with no melting. Light Scrambling, bushwhacking, and bouldering.
