There is a lot of hype about how bad this road is, but Bob is right, most cars can make it. One jeep rental company out of Furnace Creek is making a fortune. We drove slowly and carefully in my Subaru, averaging ~15 mph. But we did see a lot people cruising at 30+ mph, so it's no wonder that flat tires are common.
Drive carefully and you will be fine. Don't believe all the hype unless you plan to drive fast.
