The Notch by Gem Glacier

This shot was taken from the point of departure from the Highline Trail. To get there from Logan Pass, hike the Highline Trail for four miles to the saddle between Haystack Butte and the Garden Wall. Then hike another quarter-mile until you are immediately beneath a broad, obvious couloir (see picture). Logan Pass is at about 6700'; the saddle is at about 7000'. There are some ups and downs in between, but overall, it is an easy hike. Find your way up the couloir to the notch. There is a lot of Class 3 and it is easy to get onto Class 5 terrain, but it's not too hard to keep it at Class 3 with maybe a spot of Class 4 here and there. Glacier NP, MT-- August 2012
