But I did ruminate on this the other day:
Wouldn't it suck if you got to a campsite (possibly in waning light) and set about pitching the tent. Then, you walk five feet toward the edge of the site and stir up a hornet's nest. Shoot! There goes the campsite. Do you run into the tent to escape?

Re: Just saw thisIf there is water, I head for the water or run away into the trees. I would worry if I dove into the tent one or two hornets are going to get in there before I can zip it up and then what do you do? Take a couple stings until you can swat them. What if they elude you within the tent and keep stinging you? I take my chances running screaming like a little girl into the forest. Then again, I've never had a problem with looking like an idiot.
Do you recall if Emerald was as loose as Saska? We bailed after Cardinal and Saska thinking Emerald was more of the same crap loose gullies and shaky rock. Plus there was a forest fire on the other side of Saska. Was just wondering if we missed anything or if we made the right choice to forego peakbagging for some more scenic stuff down near Leavenworth (we went and did Labyrinth instead with our extra day).

Emerald doesn't offer any better views than Saska or Cardinal except for those to the NE and those of Saska and Cardinal. You didn't miss anything.
As for Emerald's looseness, it's worse than Saska because it's steeper. But it isn't as hard over all as Cardinal.

Re: Just saw thisThanks, I don't feel bad for not bagging it then. Although I thought Cardinal was easier than Saska. Larger rocks and less sand. And I thought Saska was steeper than Cardnial at the top of the gully when it got more sandy (or the dreaded pebbles over rock). My buddy thought the same as you though. Hope the fires we saw didn't damage too much there though. Some really great spots in this area. Thanks.

Re: Just saw thisIndividuals' experiences between two peaks is dictated by individuals' routes taken. I don't recall any steep gullies on Saska (at least for the ascent) but I went up the south or SW side.
Did you see any of the Domke Lake Fire? That's certainly something you would have seen from Emerald Peak but you might also have seen it from Saska (you did mention seeing a fire from there).

Re: Just saw thisThose two fires must certainly be what we saw. Never saw any flames but lots of white billowing smoke would come up and over the saddle between Saska and Emerald and a bit to the west os Saska as well. It would settle in the valley where we camped and then get blown out. Happened on the night we hiked in and then again two days later. I never was able to see any peak directly north of the Pinnacle/Saska/Emerald/Cardinal line. And I am not sure but I thought you would be able to see down to Lake Chelan from Cardinal but it was just a smoky valley far below. At times, the valley just smelled like one big campfire and once it made us cough for a bit. I've got photos I will post hopefully in a few days but it just looks like a fog bank to the north. We did see lots of scorched trees in the Millham Pass (I think that was the name of it) area though.
We went up the S or SE side of Saska, the normal route up the one obvious gully.
