Lightning
A snowshoe with Shknbk. Snowed most of the day and chilly (single digits). Turned out to be a pretty good workout! It was one way to enjoy the "polar vortex" :)

Thunder and Lighting
Started at the East Portal, made the summit of Thunder, before heading down to the saddle between Thunder and Lighting, and then headed up Lighting's northern slope, which is steep in places and covered with brushy aspens which made the going a bit difficult. Headed down the long northern ridge of Lighting. Beautiful views from the summits of both of these peaks.

Nov 21 2010: The wife and I headed up Thunder Peak in near whiteout conditions. Were going to traverse all the way over to Estes Cone and back down, but wife's knee went bum when she slipped and fell so we called it a day. I did make a quick side trip up Emerald Peak while she returned to the car.
Dec 01 2010: Headed up Estes Cone from Lily Lake, in the face of strong winds, then traversed over to Lightning Peak.

Early Fall combo
Actually had a really nice day out, unseasonably warm which, made for some horrendous postholing with the snow that had already fallen!
Surprised to find registers on top!

Climbed these from the Y when I worked there. I thought the names Thunder and Lightening were the YMCA names for the peaks but I guess the names are more widely known

East Portal
A nice way to kick off the new year. Views were nice and I'm sure would have been better if not for the clouds and falling snow in the higher peaks. Thanks to the "active mountain lion in area" signs posted at the TH I think I spent more time looking behind me than in front ;-)
Fun little hike to Thunder. See my trip report under "Trip Reports".

One of the longer five + mile hikes I've done in The Park.

Thunder - Lightning
Snowshoed both peaks from the East Portal Trailhead. Unseasonably warm for February, I wore a t-shirt for most of the trip. The ascent up the north slope of 'Lightning Peak' was fairly grueling, but the views on top were well worth the effort.
