an Asian invasive. They're really taken to the Appalachians.

Interesting. Unfortunately, some aphid-like invasives have also taken to the Appalachians. It was really sad seeing what they've done to the fir trees above 6,000 feet in the Smokies.

Those were hemlocks. Carolina hemlock and Eastern hemlock. Both are headed for extinction. There's not much that can be done about it outside of treating each tree with adelgicide to kill the Hemlock wooly adelgid.
