My congratulations for the mountain and route description, both are excellent.I climbed this fantastic ferrata some years ago, and completely agree with lauds, you have expressed about it. But, I feel some scruples about your evaluation of difficulty. You simply used the UIAA scale, which is in my opinion reserved only for alpinistic ascents, not for secured ferratas. I suppose your intention was to designate the difficulty "without" security devices, but it could be somewhat disturbing for someone, who is less familiar with alpine ferratas. Better let you use the austrian (A -D) or german (1-6) grading system for ferratas. For instance, I would evaluate the "Ferrata dei Cinquanta" C/D or 4/5, respectively. Personally, I prefer the german grading system, which is similar to the Welzenbach's UIAA scale, only using the arabic numbers.
Best wishes, Andrej
Thank you for the compliments, I loved this route and I'm glad that somebody here knows what I'm talking about.
The ferrata rating system is always object of discussion, and apparently the austrian and german are quite different from the italian ( Gabriele wrote an article about it ). The ferrate ( especially in the Dolomites ) are often overrated, sometimes just to bring more turists looking for the "exploit".
I think your evaluation for this route is correct, I rated "difficult" because is very long and exposed. The technical difficult actually is not very high. Sometimes I use the UIAA grade just to give a hint of how the route would be without iron ropes, I'll explain it better in the description.
Ciao!
Good points, guys! That were my thoughts too. I'd never dare with my skills and equipment on a UIAA IV route, but would probably dare to try a ferrata of the Cinquanta difficulty.
Cheers!
This one is for you, Vid! It's not very difficult, and there are rungs and handles in this difficult passages.
But remember to wear the ferrata set, it's too risky without it.
Ciao!
