South Ridge Scramble

South Ridge Scramble

This is the scrambling section along the southern ridge on Coffin Peak. It is mostly Class 3, but I found some Class 4 spots along the way (they can be avoided). Accessing the ridge from its side rather than from its base can involve some Class 5 moved. The scramble ultimately leads to a false summit (not visible), the first of four encountered along this route (there is not too much elevation change between the summits, though). The other peak shown is not the actual summit. Part of the true summit is barely visible on the right. Death Valley National Park, CA-- March 2008
