The Grenzgletscher meets the Gornergletscher

The Gornergletscher comes from the left, the Grenzgletscher flows down in the center, between Monte Rosa on the left and Liskamm on the right. After joining, the lower part keeps the name Gornergletscher. Photo taken from the Gornergrat. 4 July 2013.

But

it looks as if the Grenz glacier contributes more to the joint glacier!

Re: But

I agree that the Grenzgletscher may very well be the bigger of the two before they join up. From this point of view it certainly does look that way. However, this view is a bit misleading, because it shows a substantial part of the catchment area of the Grenzgletscher, but much less clearly that of the Gornergletscher, which is quite big too.

Mark Hallam and I camped on it a couple of days last summer, and explored it. It was easy going, being relatively flat for the most part and some steeper bits that are easily circumvented. Nevertheless, because the area is quite big, it takes a while to cover the distance to the highest points, in partucular Großes Fillarhorn and Torre di Castelfranco. In fact, we went a bit further north after that, to Cima di Jazzi, but that's the catchment area of the Findelgletscher.
