Arenal
Hiked around it on my way to Cerra Chato. You can only hike around the base. It was more active than usual when I went in Jan '10. The observatory has a good lookout point.
I hiked past Arenal on my way to Cerro Chato and the waterfall in Fortuna. I happened to see lava at night when I stopped up at lookup point. No summit bagging on this peak.
Although you're not allowed to climb it because it is 'very active' the Arenal wasn't that active at the end of April '09, (only saw some lava rocks rolling down at night) but I had a nice walk through the forest at its bottom with plenty of wildlife.
Not actually a "summit," they don't actually allow hiking all the way up volcano that's still shooting out fiery lava rocks... but a pleasant rainforest hike along the slopes, with monkeys, etc. to a clearing where, after waiting about 15-30 minutes, we started to see the fiery rocks tumbling down the side of the volcano... very cool, one of the must-sees in Costa Rica.
Route Climbed: West Slopes Hike and Fortuna Waterfall. No I did not climb to the summit!! Date Climbed: February 19, 2004
We were lucky enough to have some clear weather and to witness an eruption. We also saw a coati, several toucans, and several monkeys. An interesting trip!
