Climbed from the West Side
My husband Alois and I did not want to follow a dirt road to the summit, as most people apparently do, so explored an alternative. We drove about 7 1/2 miles up FS Road from the West, near Ely, along the Upper Terraces. From there it was a short on the dirt road then 1,800' ascent straight up, no trail. Good Hike!

near drive-up
Almost drive-up, up with Dean in Range Rover to 10,177' . Then parked and walk the last 750 feet. Rain coming in so left quickly.

9,400 ft.
Drove the road to about 9,400 ft. then we were stopped by lots of snow. We walked the snow covered road to the summit. Major thunderstorms every where. We got off the summit safe, but got hailed on almost the whole way back to the car.

Have always enjoyed Ely
Camped with my dad near the Ward Townsite signs and walked the road to the top the next morning. Logistically easy, but still nearly 3,500 feet of gross gain on a warm but beautiful day. Deer season here, so I stuck to the road. Saw lots of deer, but no hunters. My report: Ward Mountain (8/3/2008)
