Southwest slopes snow climb
Started from Cordova Pass CG. Snow was waist deep in places from the TH. Almost all of the trail was covered in mashed potato snow. I managed without snowshoes but brought an axe. Above treeline, I climbed to the right of the standard ridge route, but descended the southwest ridge (std route). Nice day- didn't see anyone for the duration of my hike/climb.

Trail from Cordova Pass
Nice trail to the base of the mountain, then it's kind of a steep talus mess for the next 2,000 feet of vertical. Nothing too bad and there are sections of trail, just steep and loose. Interesting views from the summit, especially of the radial dyke system in the area.
We were able to snag a campsite at Cordova Pass CG on Friday night. We started hiking around 5:50 and summited around 8:30. We were the only party on top and the views were amazing. Clouds enveloped the plains and the mountains majestically rose through them. Definitely one of my favorite county high points. Summer conditions but boy is that last mile or so brutally steep.

West Spanish Peak Winter Ascent/Snowboard Fail
Attempted a winter ascent with plans to snowboard down beginning on a windy single digit morning on the last day of January 2017. Hiked in 6 miles to Cordova Pass (road closed in winter) and camped for the night - great solitude with beautiful sunset views of Blanca Massif to the west. The next morning I began my journey to the summit, but after a mile of post holing up to my waist, even with my snowshoes on, I had to turn back somewhere above 12000'. Unfortunately, I was only able to snowboard short sections of the trail on the way down.

Standard
With Rachael and Scot from Cordova Pass. About 2-3 inches of new snow but the road was easily drivable and the upper reaches of the mountain were blown clear. Pretty nice fall hike and a good escape from the foot+ of snow the northern mountains got.

Cordova Pass...
Probably the best Autumn day of 2017. Blue skies all day, no clouds & warm temperatures.
Hiked with Britt Jones. Also added on Point 11,653 just across the pass.

From Cordova Pass
Nice hike, though we probably should not have made it our first of the trip after coming from sea level the previous day. Excellent views from the summit; the volcanic dikes that fan out to the north and west of the mountain are striking.

Hiked up from Cordova Pass. Our group of 4 got a late start, signing the trail register at the edge of the Wilderness at nearly 10:00 am. The weather looked pretty iffy, but we planned to go as far as it would allow. At the tree line, it still looked questionable whether we would be able to summit, but it did not look bad enough to turn us around, yet. Others had summited and were on their way down. The poor weather passed to the south, and they day was getting nicer. The hike above the tree line proved too steep for the other 3 in the group. I summited around 1:00 pm, just as some clouds rolled in. But, within a few minutes, it was clear again. All the high peaks to the west had clouds above probably 13,000 feet. I descended to find the rest of the group napping in the sun just below the tree line.

A quickie late in the day
Did this mountain after touring Capulin Volcano earlier in the day so I got a very late start. I got chased off the summit by a boom of thunder directly over my head when the storm clouds rolled in. No lightning but still very unwise of me. Two hours and twenty minutes up and four hours thirty minutes door to door from the Cordova Pass trailhead.
First big mountain climb. Great weather. Climbed traditional route from West Spanish Peak Trailhead. Left trailhead and 8AM, treeline at 9:15AM, summitted at 11:15AM, arrived back at trailhead at 1:30 PM. Last 1500 vertical feet are steep and rocky. Great climb though. Ready for a 14er.

This peak was a treat. Those dike formations are incredible and of course only appreciated from above. My eight month old puppy and I were on the summit by 7:45 and we had the place to ourselves for an hour. This was her first summit over 10k.
Hiked with the fat dog (Rambo), he made it look easy. 120 pound lab and he flew right up it! I didn't fly, but did it in 2.5 or so hours, counting a couple of stops to water Rambo.
