"After the first glass, you see things as you wish they were. After the second, you see things as they are not. Finally, you see things as they really are, which is the most horrible thing in the world."

Sheer solitudeBrushy but rewarding hike through pinyon forests and up Wheeler's steep ridge. Last summit log entry was July 2014 - over a year ago. No trail, no cairns, no sign of human presence. Wheeler Pass Road from Pahrump wasn't too bad, only crawled the last half mile.

from Wheeler Pass via the standard ridge routeI hiked this one with Steven Stembridge and it was a succesful outing with the exception of a fall I took when I was almost back to the vehicle. 19 Staples in my head, 1 stitch in my knee, 2 stitches in my arm, 2 sets of 5 stitches in my forehead, and 4 other stitches in random places on my head, a concussion and a sprained ankle, 5 hours in the ER and thanks to the concussion I have absolutely no memory of what happened. I remember hiking down most of the way down the mountain and then the next thing I remember was riding down the Wheeler Pass dirt road in Steven's truck with my head wrapped in his extra shirt and him telling me I kept asking him the same questions over and over.

standard ridge past the horsesNice bald summit, pretty much just a stroll on the ridge, avoiding brush. Went with Val D.
There were feral horses on the ridge; they looked lean, God knows what they eat.

Some obscure loopAlways wanted to head up this thing in winter, but never got around to it; instead, I did some obscure, funky loop in Summer 2006 before heading over to the Sierra later that day for a long one the next day. A decent enough summit.
