Nice stretch of the AT
I hiked in from the gates by the wildlife reserve on Frenchtown Road, where the road went from passenger car quality to high clearance/SUV quality. It appears as though you can actually get MUCH closer to the TH by coming in from a side logging road to the north but that would involve more than just a direct in and out. Frenchtown Road has the advantage of turning right off the paved road from Greenville and going straight to the TH, although you will probably have to park behind a set of gates about ten minutes walk from where the AT crosses over the road. Only an hour and thirty five minutes once I got on the AT and the trail was well signed. Hard left at the shelter at the 1.7 mile mark. Excellent views of Katahdin to the north.
